About Stephens County, GA

Stephens County is located at the end of 385 about 75 miles north of Atlanta. The county seat is Toccoa, which is Cherokee for “the beautiful”. Toccoa has taken nature’s blessings of mountains and lakes, added man’s inventions (boats, tents, water skis, golf clubs) and made a center for recreation. The town is flanked on one side by the Chattahoochee National Forest and by Lake Hartwell on the other.

Traveler’s Rest is a state historic site located near Toccoa, this stagecoach inn and plantation house was built originally to accommodate adventurers to America’s earliest western frontier. Today the site in maintained as a historic monument to the early days and includes the original buildings and faithful reproductions of a well house, meat house and more.
