Nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains lies the town of Elkton, VA, where you can enjoy small town life and be only fifteen minutes from the City of Harrisonburg. The town of Elkton is rich with Civil War history. Several historic landmarks can be found in the town once known as “Conrad’s Store”. Among these Civil War landmarks are the Jennings House, which served as a hospital, and the Miller-Kite House, which was the headquarters of General Stonewall Jackson at the beginning of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Today both houses serve as town museums.
In 1908 the area known as “Conrad’s Store” officially became the town of Elkton, and was named for Elk Run stream. A short distance to the east of Elkton you can find the Shenandoah National Park. Tourists come from all over the United States to hike trails, camp and enjoy the wildlife. Several areas of the park that you will want to visit are Dark Hollow Falls, Big Meadows and Doyles River Overlook. The Shenandoah River runs through the heart of Elkton and is enjoyed by tourist and natives alike. Many residents spend all day in the summertime floating down the river. The Shenandoah River is considered rare in North America because it flow to the north. Most rivers in North America flow to the south.
Residents of Elkton keep up with the town’s events through The Valley Banner, a local newspaper. There are quite a few restaurants in town, but you have to stop in at Ciro’s and enjoy a steak and cheese sub or their pizza. In the summer area residents enjoy the public pool at Swift Run Campground and the nearby Massanutten Water Park. In the fall of the year Elkton gears up for it’s annual Autumn Days Celebration where you can enjoy home-cooked foods, local crafts and music.
In recent years the Elkton town council has put much effort into restoring the town, especially in the downtown area. The town recently converted a vacant building into a community center, and there are many other plans in the works. Elkton is a great place to call home, just ask the local residents.
