Hinton, Virginia is located approximately four miles west of the City of Harrisonburg, Virginia on Rt. 33 West. It is a small village which has a post office and two country stores, Hinton Market & Deli and K&J’s Market, that the local farmers patronize daily for hardy snacks, homemade sandwiches and groceries. It is commonplace to see farm tractors and horse and buggies travel the short distance through this rural community, as there are many Mennonite Farms. Muddy Creek runs through this cozy area and many enjoy fishing from the banks. Most of the Hinton area is known for good trout fishing. Hinton is also the home of the Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative, Inc. This is a turkey processing plant owned by approximately 154 farmers which makes it the second largest locally owned employer in Virginia.
Hinton’s earlier name was Karicofe derived from the Karicofe Post Office. It is believed the name Hinton was taken after Colonel Joseph Hinton from the Confederate Army who lived on Muddy Creek. War Branch Creek runs through the edge of this hamlet where there was a furious battle between Indians and white soldiers probably in the late 1700’s. For years musket balls and Indian arrowheads were unearthed remnants of a hard fought battle.
