Keezletown, VA Elementary School

The Keezletown Elementary School was one of the 1st public schools in Rockingham County that was established after the Civil War. The original school was built on “the old church lot” in 1877 on land deeded from George Keisell and consisted of a 2-room building. As the town grew, a larger school was needed, and in 1899 land was purchased from Keisell and a new 4-room school was constructed in the school’s current location. Over the following 20 years more land was purchased to prepare for more growth. A fire in 1907 prompted for a new brick building to be built, and at this time the school began to offer 1 & 2 years of high school instruction. Another fire destroyed the building in 1916, and it was replaced by the brick building that currently stands and was dedicated in 1917. After an auditorium and 4-room addition were built in 1934, the school began to offer a 4-year high school program and became an accredited High School. The last class to graduate from Keezletown School was in 1949, and the following year, all High School students were consolidated to Montevideo High School in neighboring Penn Laird and the school became Keezletown Elementary School. In 1960 a 3-room addition was added to the back of the school, and in the mid 1970’s the entire building was renovated. The school’s history seemed to come to an end in 2001 when Keezletown Elementary School closed its doors and students went to Peak View Elementary School. The school, including nearly 7 acres, was purchased in 2006 by Classical Redeemer, a private school. A portion of the building was renovated and re-opened in 2007.
