Generals Lee and Grant led an epic battle at the site on May 5 and 6, 1864 resulting in 26,000 casualties. The victory of the Union marked General Grant’s first step toward Appomattox. Another sought after Civil War landmark is the Exchange Hotel Civil War Museum in Gordonsville, which served as a hospital during the Battle of Wilderness.
