Welcome to Valley Lee, MDValley Lee is a small community of Saint Mary’s County, Maryland, located within the beautiful Chesapeake Bay area. An important part of the nation’s Colonial history, the region of Valley Lee and Saint Mary’s County was where the British first stepped foot in Maryland, and Saint Mary’s City—located just 10 miles east of Valley Lee--was the colony’s first capital, dating back to 1634. Today Saint Mary’s County contains a mix of urban and rural areas, the Potomac River and miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Valley Lee itself has less than 1,000 residents, offering a quiet East Coast retreat with the convenience of three major cities nearby—Washington D.C. (65 miles), Baltimore (94 miles) and Richmond, VA (110 miles).
Residents of Valley Lee enjoy an abundance of attractions and recreation right at their fingertips, from lighthouse tours and museums to shopping, dining, and outdoor fun. Because St. Mary’s County’s claim to fame is its rich Colonial heritage, there are many well-preserved historic sites and museums for history buffs both young and old to explore, such as Leonardtown’s Old Jail Museum and Hollywood’s Sotterly Plantation, dated 1703. One of the nation’s best archeological sites for learning about 17th-18th century Colonial history is Historic St. Mary’s City—the state’s most elaborate 835-acre outdoor living history museum, where a 1667 brick chapel is currently being reconstructed. In addition to its many historical attractions, St. Mary’s County also offers quality theatre, arts and entertainment, perfect for a weekend afternoon or night out. There are several professional art galleries throughout the area, and the community of Lexington Park is home to the Newtowne Players at Three Notch Theatre, a popular community theatre group that performs everything from Shakespeare to contemporary musicals. For music entertainment, there is the Chamber Orchestra of Southern Maryland and the River Concert Series sponsored by St. Mary’s College, which invites both national and international musicians.
