Renowned for its water sports such as scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, wind surfing, and water skiing, Gig Harbor's extensive shoreline and deep water bays provide a picturesque backdrop for the various activities available. Among others, one can enjoy the numerous walking and biking trails, stay in award winning inns, over 14 bed and breakfasts, or play a round of golf on one of the four courses.
In addition, locals and visitors can take advantage of the community-based productions held throughout the year. In the winter, Encore! Theater has performances at Burton Park Theater and in the summer, musical performances are held under the stars at Cottesmore Outdoor Theater. The Gig Harbor Farmer's Market which runs from April to October includes fresh flowers, produce, food, wood crafts, and jewelry from approximately 100 vendors and is a perfect opportunity to appreciate the rich local culture.
With a city population of 6,500 and growing, a prosperous economy and convenient location, Gig Harbor averages only 37 inches of rainfall per year and a mild climate which compliments its affordable homes. It is only 45 minutes from Sea-Tac International Airport and an hour from downtown Seattle.
Named in 1841 by Captain Charles Wilkes after he took shelter from a storm in the small bay during his U.S. Exploring Expedition, Gig Harbor also attracted commercial fisherman and farmers from as far away as Norway, Sweden, and Croatia. In July of 1940, the first Narrows Bridge connecting Gig Harbor and the Peninsula with Tacoma was built.
State-of-the-art education is another important part of what sets Gig Harbor apart from most cities in Washington. The Peninsula School District includes fifteen schools, 9,200 students, grows annually between four and five percent and boasts an extensive history of academic accomplishments. There are several Montessori, Christian, and Catholic schools and options for home-schoolers at Henderson Bay High School. There's something for everyone here in Gig Harbor.
