Welcome to Sequim, WA

The city of Sequim (pronounced “s’kwim”) is located along the Dungeness River at the base of the Olympic Mountains, on the north Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. The first European to arrive in the Dungeness Valley region was Spanish explorer Ensign Manuel Quimper, who entered the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1790 but did not settle there. The valley’s first settlers came in the 1850’s; they included pioneers from New England, the South, and the Midwest, as well as more Europeans. The area that would become Sequim had an unexpected climate that brought little rain, and it wasn’t until the town’s first settlers established irrigation canals in the 1890’s that the arid prairies would be ripe for farming. One of Sequim’s unique crops is lavender; the city is known as the “Lavender Capital of North America” and has over 25 lavender farms. Sequim residents celebrate their agricultural past and present with two yearly festivals—the 111 year-old Irrigation Festival and the Sequim Lavender Festival.

Today the city of Sequim has a population of over 5,000 people. In recent years, Sequim has grown in popularity as a good retirement location, mainly due to its pleasing weather that offers less than 15 inches of rain per year and plenty of sunny days. Despite its steadily increasing population, Sequim has retained much of its small-town charm and natural beauty, with the beautiful Olympic Mountains at its southern border and the Strait of Juan de Fuca at its north. Outdoor enthusiasts of all types—from berry pickers and clam diggers to kayakers and hikers—will feel right at home in Sequim. The city is conveniently located near the Olympic National Park and Forest, which offers a variety of recreation and stunning scenery year-round. And for golf lovers, Sequim offers three beautifully designed courses that will present a challenge for any skill level. Coinciding with its rural atmosphere, Sequim also has a touch of the big city. Sequim itself offers a variety of unique shops, galleries, and restaurants, as well as a few large nationwide retail stores, grocery markets, and coffee shops with high speed internet; but, residents of Sequim can enjoy the best of both worlds with the more urban atmospheres of Seattle and Silverdale no more than 68 miles away.

With so much to offer its residents—rural charm, natural beauty, a friendly community, and more—Sequim is truly a wonderful place to call home. For those who are interested in relocating to Sequim, the real estate market is brimming with exciting housing opportunities that appeal to people from all walks of life.
