Berkeley County sits at the northern terminus of the 200-mile Shenandoah Valley, one of the nation’s most popular vacation destinations. As a result, it is known as the “Northernmost Gateway to the Shenandoah Valley.” The county was formed in 1772, but remained part of neighboring Virginia until the formation of West Virginia in the 1860s. Today, Berkeley County is the state’s – and one of the country’s – fastest-growing counties, with a population of 102,000. Its long history is still on display though; the county is home to 106 properties on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Civil War Discovery Trail.
Berkeley County’s scenic location in the Shenandoah Valley, in addition to its proximity to such attractions as Luray Caverns, Skyline Drive, Natural Bridge, and Bryce Mountain Resort, is part of what attracts so many outdoor enthusiasts to relocate here. But the area is ideal for a wide range of home seekers; the county seat of Martinsburg and the town of Hedgesville provide ample amenities. And getting to Berkeley County is easy. Two regional airports and one international airport are within easy driving distance and Amtrak, the Maryland Area Rail Commuter train, and the Eastern Panhandle Transit Authority provide service in and around the area.
