The St. Lawrence River is 800 miles long and connects Lake Ontario, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world to the Atlantic Ocean, thereby making it a major shipping channel. Lake Ontario flows into the St. Lawrence River and all along are towns & villages with their own special shops & attractions.
If you head north to the 1,000 islands region, you can visit the village of Clayton, rich in river history. Clayton has been designated by the US Dept. of Interior as a historic district with 31 buildings built between 1854 and the 1920’s.Clayton was voted “Best Small Town” in Coastal Living Magazine’s May 2009 issue. Visit the famous Antique Boat Museum with its priceless collection of over 200 boats. Also visit the Clayton Opera House and the quaint shops and restaurants overlooking the beautiful river. Fishermen come from all over the country for the famous Bass Fishing tournament and the blessing of the fleet. In Alexandria Bay celebrate Pirates Week, take a boat tour to historic Boldt Castle or Singer Castle, tour Millionaires Row. Go to the French Festival in Cape Vincent, tour the War of 1812 battlefield in Sackets Harbor.
