Welcome to Westminster, CO

The city of Westminster, Colorado is a northwest suburb of Denver located approximately 13 miles north of the Denver city center and 18 miles southeast of Boulder. The city’s history dates back to the discovery of gold in the South Platte River Valley in 1858, which brought the attention of many settlers who originally intended to seek their fortunes in California. The area was first named DeSpain Junction after its first permanent resident, Pleasant DeSpain, who built his homestead in 1870. When Connecticut land developer C.J. Harris arrived in 1885 and began purchasing land, DeSpain Junction was renamed Harris, or Harris Park. The town would change names once again upon completion of the Westminster Castle, established in 1891 in honor of Westminster University, London. The town of Westminster was incorporated in 1911.
