About Whitemarsh Island, GeorgiaWhitemarsh Island is located east of the downtown historic district of Savannah and situated between Thunderbolt and the beach (Tybee Island).
Whitemarsh (pronounced Whitmarsh) is a moderately priced bedroom community of Savannah, surrounded by the Wilmington River (Intra-coastal waterway), Richardson Creek, and Turner’s Creek and is one of the many marsh encircled islands between the ocean-fronting barrier islands of the Georgia coastline and the mainland. There are several shopping centers with wonderful local restaurants serving everything from seafood to barbecue to Mexican and more!
With easy access to the Intra-Coastal Waterway and Savannah’s tidal creeks, it is ideally located for boating and fishing excursions and activities, yet only a few miles from Hunter Army Air Force Base, area hospitals (Memorial, Candler & St. Joseph’s), and colleges (Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah College of Art & Design, Savannah State University, Savannah Technical College, and South University).
With an area of 6.61 miles and a population of approximately 6,000-plus, Whitemarsh Island was once home to the Guale Indians with physical and cultural evidence of over 4000 years of human habitation and activity. | More Local Area InformationWhere every day is like resort living!
