Living in Famous Woodstock, NY

Woodstock, NY may be the most famous small town in America. Nestled in the heart of the Catskill Mountains and once a community of farmers and tanners, Woodstock was home to a vibrant arts and crafts movement in the early 1900’s with its Byrdcliffe and Maverick Colonies. In the ‘50s and ‘60s the Beats and hippies were “on the road” to Woodstock for respite from hectic city life and cultural and spiritual inspiration.

Today’s Woodstock is an eclectic melding of full time and dual residents with a dynamic social and cultural scene centered along Tinker Street’s classic village green and its multitude of shops, restaurants, galleries and theaters. Spread out from the village and on up Overlook Mountain, homes in the area span the style range from “funky” hand-builts (there’s even a book about them!) farmhouses, cabins, traditional Capes and Colonials to historic and contemporary estates with breathtaking views and water features.

Prices run the gamut from entry-level to $1 million+ and offer significant value over properties just a ½ hour closer to NYC. In fact, a Brookings Institute study (9/08) shows appreciation since 1980 far out pacing national figures.

With its low key “live and let live” vibe, locals and celebrities co-exist in an area of singular natural beauty and cultural excitement just 2 hours from metro New York City. For outdoor enthusiasts, hiking, fishing and skiing are nearby and major mall and large retailer shopping is within 15 minutes.
