Attractions in St. John, Virgin Islands
Aside from the unlimited outdoor adventures the island has to offer, many people are attracted to St. John because of its resistance to over-commercialization. There are no traffic lights and no airport on St. John—just a ferry service that runs to and from St. Thomas, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada. Through preservation and restricted development, St. John remains a true island retreat unspoiled by the traffic, noise, and blaring lights of the world’s more urban locales. And yet, the island offers a long list of world-class amenities and subtle conveniences that make living on St. John easy and enjoyable. Cruz Bay, referred to as “Downtown” by the locals, is situated on the island’s west coast and is St. John’s most populated city and commercial center. Cruz Bay is home to many exciting restaurants and shopping centers, including the popular Lemon Tree Mall, Wharfside Village, and Mongoose Junction. The city also offers generic and specialty supermarkets, and a variety of services. Cruz Bay is home to the island’s public school for grades K-9, the Julius E. Sprauve School; St. John high school students attend either the Charlotte Amalie High School or the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School on the island of St. Thomas. Residents of St. John can also choose from three excellent private schools for their children, including the highly acclaimed Antilles School on St. Thomas.
